It is prepared by sulfonating linear alkylbenzene (LAB) commercially. It is a chemical with the formula CH₃(CH₂)₁₁C₆H₄SO₃H or C₁₈H₃₀O₃S. It is soluble in water and an emulsifying agent. It is used as a detergent powder to wash clothes, cars, floors, etc.

LABSA is an anionic surfactant with hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups. This compound is non-volatile and produced by the sulfonation process. It has replaced the nonlinear (branched) alkylbenzene sulfonate (BAS) in household detergents worldwide. It is a corrosive chemical, and any contact with skin may cause burns and contact with eyes may cause ocular lesions.
